A Living Icon of the West
Like the majestic saguaro, the Joshua Tree is one of the most iconic plants in the Southwest's Mojave desert. It was debatably named by California-bound Mormon settlers for their shape being reminiscent of the Biblical Joshua raising his hands to the sky in prayer. The Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) range spans parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and northern Mexico, often clustered into forests.
In addition to the renowned Joshua Tree National Forest in California, we have two significant forests in Arizona. The aptly named Joshua Tree Parkway runs through a dense forest between Wickenburg and Wikieup northwest of Phoenix on the way to Las Vegas. The Arizona Joshua Tree Forest is far to the north near the western edge of the Grand Canyon and the Nevada border. Like the saguaro and the agave, the rugged and dramatic Joshua tree is as Western as it gets.
